On Saturday afternoon our house was taken over by a small army of fairies. With Grandma & Grandad up from Cornwall for the weekend, her favourite friends to play with, lots of yummy cake, not to mention the much longed for game of pass the parcel, I’m a little surprised Georgie didn’t actually explode from the joy and excitement of it all.
With a bunch of three and four year olds, we went for the chilled out approach for Georgie’s birthday. Before it started we set up a couple of small tables with some fairy colouring sheets and the Maped Jungle pens in the middle (which we are still loving a lot), and set up our “decorate a fairy house” bits on the kitchen table.
James mowed the lawn in the morning and then put out the old living room rug and our folding chairs for adults and kids to sit on, and we crossed our fingers for decent weather. Other than that, a wrapped up parcel and a load of food in the fridge was as far as our party planning went. Once the kids arrived we just let them do what they wanted, when they wanted.
We we lucky with the weather in the sense that it didn’t rain! At one point it got pretty chilly and windy and the kids retreated indoors to eat, changing their carpet picnic venue from the garden rug to the living room one instead. They loved decorating mini fairy houses – and when it came to the glitter and stickers, more is definitely more.
The cakes, baked by me and decorated by my Mum after I smiled sweetly at her and thanked her lots (she cleaned the kitchen, too – Mums are great!), went down a storm and almost all disappeared within the three hours of party time. The girls all loved having a supply of wings and wands on standby too. Lydia had a bit of a Diva moment and dragged Grandma upstairs to help her with an outfit change an hour into the party, no idea why.
I think I can safely say that Georgie’s first “proper” birthday party was a resounding success. We had a few no-shows but I’d invited so many kids that it was almost a relief as our house didn’t explode due to the number of people inside. The girls were both exhausted on Sunday afterwards, and both say they loved it. There were certainly an awful lot of smiles, giggles, and fun – and only one or two slightly grumpy moments.
